Money:

DO NOT TAKE $US dollars. Cuba and the USA have had a very unstable relationship. It is for this reason, that the US dollars is no longer welcome in Cuba, and this has been obvious by the exorbitant commissions and fees charged when tourists try to change their USD into the convertible peso. It is therefore advisable that you carry Euro, Pound Sterling or Canadian dollars before you travel to Cuba. You will be able to change these currencies into the local currency in Havana, Trinidad and Santiago.

Cash: The best way to travel Cuba is to have your money available in cash. The US dollar is no longer accepted in Cuba, please DO NOT bring US dollars. We advise taking your cash in Euro, Pound Sterling or Canadian. You will be able to change these currencies into the local currency in Havana, Trinidad and Santiago.

ATM’s: ATM’s in Cuba are very unreliable and are best avoided.

Credit Cards: Credit cards can be used in certain areas but should not be relied upon. Please check with you bank before considering using your credit card as a means of funding your holiday in Cuba, as your card may not be accepted. Credit cards issued by American Banks will NOT be accepted.

Traveller’s cheques: Changing traveller’s cheques can pose problems. You will need to keep a purchase receipt if you chose to bring these. Please note that the commission on changing traveller’s cheques can be quite high, and places to have them cashed are also limited. AMEX traveller’s cheques will not be accepted at all.

Airport Tax: On departure you will have to pay an airport tax of 25 CUC (19 euros or 14 GBP)

Security:
  • We recommend that you do not take unnecessary valuables with you. Wearing jewellery and expensive watches will attract attention.
  • A money belt, or something similar, worn close to your body is the best way to carry passports, airline tickets and money.
  • DO NOT leave any valuables in ANY hotel room, please use SAFETY DEPOSIT BOXES. Items are left at your own risk.
  • Pickpockets operate everywhere, particularly in tourist areas and in crowded markets; you must always exercise care. Be aware that anything left lying around will also be liable to theft.
Food And Drink:

Whilst in Cuba you will find that official restaurants are state owned and the variety is by no means varied or plentiful. You might find that, locating a good restaurant could be quite an adventure in itself. This is why, on this Cuba tour, we provide lunches and dinners where we believe you would have difficulties in finding them. Daily breakfasts will be provided at all our hotels. The official national drink is a Daiquiri, but Mojitos are drunk more widely. Mojitos are a cocktail made from mint leaves, brown sugar, rum, limejuice and soda. You will find that mobile mojito stalls open at 10 am to serve a queue of people who have lined up since 9:30 am

Tipping:

For better or for worse, tipping is an accepted part of everyday life and although it is always at your discretion, you will be expected to tip to reward service.

As a general guideline, in Cuba it is customary to tip 10% at restaurants and bars, up to 5 euro (3.70GBP) to guides, and to leave approximately 2-euro (1.50 GBP) tip for the chambermaid and bellboy. We suggest clients budget for between 25-30 euros (20-25GBP) per day for personal expenses, souvenirs, evenings out, alcoholic drinks etc. There will be some days when you spend nothing at all and others when you exceed your budget.

Whilst on tour you will probably want to stay in touch with family and friends. There are several ways of doing this:

Postcards – The good ol’ fashioned postcard. But you will probably get home before the postcard does!
