Introduction:

New Zealand is a country of glacial mountains, native forests, deserted beaches and crystal clear lakes. Our South Island family adventure begins in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island, where we visit the Antarctic Centre and Orana Wildlife Park. The world famous TranzAlpine train then takes us from one coast of New Zealand to the other, through spectacular scenery of gorges, river valleys, the Southern Alps and rainforest. We try our hand at gold panning in Shantytown, before continuing to the Franz Josef Glacier with options such as glacier walks, a helihike, and ice-climbing. Next stop Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world, where we visit the original bungy site, take the gondola and luge on Bob’s Peak, and cruise on the TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak Sheep Station, still leaving some free time for other activities. We continue to Fiordland, exploring the Te Anau Glow-worm caves, with a free day for options such as the Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise, Milford Sound Cruise, day walk or kayaking. A night is spent with a host family on a farm stay in Canterbury, before we regroup for a visit to a Maori Village, with haka lessons and a night wildlife viewing tour before spending our last night back in Christchurch.

Day 1:

Christchurch. Today is an arrival day into Christchurch. Taxis and shuttles are readily available at the airport.

The pre departure meeting will be held at 6pm in the lobby of the joining hotel, giving you the chance to meet your Local Tour Guide and fellow travellers, and the opportunity to ask any questions.

Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island extends onto the Canterbury Plains, which are cordoned by the Southern Alps. The first settlers arrived at the port of Lyttleton in 1850 and while building the new town, transformed one out of three hectares into gardens and public parks. New Zealand’s English heritage is perhaps more evident in Christchurch than it is almost anywhere else. It is also a vibrant city that has traditionally supported a busy arts community - music, theatre, dance and the visual arts.

If you arrive early you may like to explore. Christchurch Tramway commenced operation on 04 February 1995. History repeated itself with the return of the familiar electric trams which disappeared from the streets of Christchurch in 1954 and now return to link Christchurch's central sites and attractions. The beautifully restored trams follow a 2.5 kilometre loop around central Christchurch taking in some of the most interesting sites. These include Cathedral Square, Aquarium of Discovery, The Arts Centre, Botanic Gardens, Canterbury Museum, Punting on the Avon, Victoria Square, and New Regent Street to name just a few. Using the day pass visitors can hop on and off at any of the nine stops around the inner city tram loop and experience the inner city sights and attractions at their leisure.

Day 2:

Christchurch - Antarctic Centre and Orana Wildlife Park.  This morning you will meet your driver who will take you to the Antarctic Centre for the Antarctic Ride Combo - Indoor Attraction & Hagglund Ride. The Antarctic Attraction recreates the atmosphere of the Antarctic providing visitors with a fun, interactive and exciting experience. Christchurch is the world's aerial gateway to Antarctica, & The Antarctic Attraction showcases the activities happening down on 'the Ice'. Experience the four dramatic seasons which make up a year in Antarctica. Feel the chill of winter and watch daylight return as the Antarctic summer approaches after four months of darkness. Use interactive technology to find out about the people who live and work in Antarctica today. Handle the polar survival clothes they wear, explore Scott Base, home of Antarctica New Zealand, and view the delightful and zany "Penguin Capers" video. Experience Antarctic conditions first-hand; even on a hot summers day! Slide down a snow slope, explore a snow cave, feel icy wind-chills, or just let your body tingle with the exhilaration of being in Antarctica temperatures.

From the cold & ice to warmer climates, this afternoon we have a very special experience for you -Orana Wildlife Park. There is plenty for visitors to enjoy at the Park with fifteen daily animal feeds, one feed approximately every 40 minutes whilst the Park is open! Orana Wildlife Park specialises in getting visitors “up close and personal with the animals”. Some animal encounters are not offered anywhere else in the world! Hand feed a Giraffe! Meet White Rhinoceros in a face-to-face encounter! Watch a Cheetah sprint! Pat a Llama! An extensive collection of New Zealand native species is of particular appeal for visitors. Observe New Zealand Kiwi, Tuatara and a range of endangered, endemic birds such as Kea, the only alpine parrot in the world. Stroll through the walk-through aviary whilst native birds fly past and listen to their calls. A farmyard area enables visitors to pet a range of domestic animals.

Optional Extra: You can also experience the Lion Encounter Ride a wonderful experience, unique to the Park. Ride on board our specially designed feeding wagon which travels with the Animal Keepers through the African Lion Reserve for close up views of these magnificent creatures feeding - a truly memorable experience! Please note: Subject to availability as there are ticket restrictions. Also participants have to be a minimum height of 1.40m.

Day 3:

Christchurch - Franz Josef Glacier.  This morning your driver will drop you off at the train station so you can catch the famous TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch - Greymouth. In little more than 4 hours - the world famous TranzAlpine train leaves Christchurch on the east coast, crosses the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, winds its way through the stunning Waimakariri Gorge, passes over massive viaducts, crosses New Zealand's greatest mountain range, the Southern Alps, and travels through lush beech forests and past serene lakes, before arriving in Greymouth on the beautiful West Coast. You reach Greymouth just after midday in time for lunch in one of Greymouth’s many cafes (not included).

After lunch you continue your journey along the West coast with a stop at Shantytown just outside of Greymouth. Shantytown is a faithfully restored replica of an 1860s West Coast gold mining town. A living monument to the hardy pioneers who forded the wildly exotic rivers and streams, and scrambled through the rugged subtropical rainforest in search of their fortunes. See over 30 historic buildings crammed with artefacts, the internationally recognized gold panning operation, New Zealand’s largest steam train passenger service, a multi-denominational church, NZ’s only publicly displayed Freemasons lodge, Horse and Buggy rides, a licensed bar and tearooms, confectionery store and a Curio and Collectables shop. On either the 1877 L-Class, 1896 improved F-Class Kaitangata or 1913 Climax, you will take a short trip through lush native rain forest along a line which follows an original sawmill tram track of the 1800s. Included in your ticket is a gold panning experience. Whether you choose to arrive at the Claim by steam train or via a short walk up an exquisite bush pathway, this is one experience that you will remember. Our New Zealand and Australasian Gold Panning Champ and his team will guide you through the entire panning process where you’ll be assured of winning a small colour.

We then continue on to the Franz Josef Glacier. In the early evening or the next morning you have the chance to watch The Flowing West Movie – Alpine Adventure Centre. The Flowing West movie theatre is a Helimax system made up of a giant movie projector combined with a giant 13m x 8m screen. Movie goers claim it is equivalent to looking directly out of a giant window, giving the viewer the impression and feeling of actually ‘being there’.The Glacier movie follows the theme of the water cycle and begins from the Tasman sea, where South Westland rain cloud is formed and blown towards the Southern Alps, then falling as now and rain over the mountains and glaciers, flowing westwards through ice cooled rivers back to the Tasman sea. The movie may not be an actual helicopter flight, but it’s definitely the next best thing, in fact some movie viewers have compared it as being equal (if not better), to international systems such as the giant IMAX system of the Grand Canyon and Omnimax systems.

Day 4:

Franz Josef Glacier – Queenstown. This morning is free and there are various options to choose from. We suggest a walk up to the glacier with younger children. For older children and/or adults we recommend a scenic helicopter flight or the helihike.

Please note that the following options should be booked in advance to ensure availablity, especially during peak seasons. Please contact Kumuka or your agent for prices and to make a reservation.

Helihike - Minimum age 8. The Helihike includes an exciting scenic flight over all three icefalls of the Franz Josef Glacier. You are landed high up on the glacier between two icefalls, to undertake a two hour guided trip. Your guide is 'free guiding', picking a route as you go and looking for the most spectacular ice formations to show you. Information about glacier processes is offered by the guide, but the panoramic views of the glacier and surrounding mountains are supreme. The superb step-cutting skill of the guides ensures our trips get into the most spectacular terrain, in comfort and at ease.

The excursion includes boots and socks, return helicopter flight to the glacier, and guided walk on the ice. Highlights include a 10 minute flight over the Franz Josef icefall, glacier landing and pickup, 2 hour hike amongst glacial ice formations with a professional guide. Return helicopter flight to base - all equipment provided, suitable for people of moderate fitness levels. The trip away is approximately 2.5 hours. Should inclement weather prevent a flight at the booked location, the same pre-paid voucher will be accepted at any of the Helicopter Line bases for a flight of similar duration and price.

Twin Glacier Heli Flight. Fly over two of New Zealand's most famous glaciers and land at the head of either the Franz Josef Glacier or Fox Glacier. View the incredible natural phenomenon of the glacier as it winds slowly down the carved valleys from its origin in the mountains high above you. The excursion includes a 30 minute flight (approx.) with snow landing. Should inclement weather prevent a flight at the booked location, the same pre-paid voucher will be accepted at any of the Helicopter Line bases for a flight of similar duration and price.

At the Hukawai Interpretive Centre there are two other options (non-weather dependent!).

The interactive glacier experience will provide people with comprehensive information on the Franz Josef glacier and its environment as well as West Coast history and Maori culture. The experience will enable people to walk through an entire glacier experience – they will start in a native garden before walking into a man-made rainforest and up a winding bush path into a glacial room designed to look exactly like Franz Josef Glacier complete with ice caves and a crevasse. (suitable for all ages). This does not need to be pre-booked.

Ice-climbing “Taster” session” - The 10-metre high indoor ice-climbing wall is the only one in the Southern Hemisphere enabling both amateur and experienced climbers to experience an ice climb. This unique glacial sport is brought indoors to an environment where anyone can give it a go.  The 1 ½ hour taster session with a professional ice climbing guide provides a great introduction to ice-climbing and belaying. (Minimum age 10 years). The ice chamber provides over 15 different climbing routes. These range from an easy angle (for beginners) through to a monster overhang (for the adventurous or experienced). A guide instructs the session to ensure everyone has a safe and fun experience

Please note that all activities need to be pre-booked during high season.

We depart Franz Josef to Fox Glacier and southwards through the Paringa forest, beside Lakes Paringa and Moeraki to the Tasman Coast at Bruce Bay, then from the great lookout from Knight's Point along the coast to Haast. The road over the Haast Pass was not completed until 1965. Once the pass summit is reached we descend through the Makarora River valley to the northern reaches of Lake Wanaka, then drive alongside this lake before crossing a saddle to neighbouring Lake Hawea. The road follows the shore of Lake Hawea to the township at the southern end from which it is a short distance to the resort town of Wanaka. From Wanaka we climb over the spectacular Crown Range road past the historic Cardrona Hotel and the winter ski fields, then drop down into the Wakatipu basin with magnificent views to the Remarkables Mountains and Lake Wakatipu. We pass by pretty Lake Hayes or via historic Arrowtown enroute to Queenstown.

Queenstown is an exhilarating, year round, alpine resort, perfect for adventurers and leisure seekers alike. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, overlooked by the majestic Southern Alps, Queenstown's reputation as the adventure capital of the world is well earned. Here you can bungy jump, "fly-by-wire" in your own "rocket", whitewater raft or surf, jet boat down canyons, tandem hanglide or parapente...! More sedately enjoy long walks, a four wheel drive trek, or cruise on a majestic steamboat; try your hand with a gold pan or a fishing rod, visit the Arrowtown Museum, and explore the Wakatipu Art Trail. Join the Queenstown Wine Trail and sample the delights on offer in the many shops, cafes and restaurants. There is plenty for everyone.

Day 5:

Queenstown - Kawarau Bridge & Bungy Centre, Bob's Peak Gondola & Luge Rides.  We drive to Kawarau Bridge in the morning and visit the Bungy Centre. Here you can get an excellent overview on the history of the bungy jump and also good views of the jumpers. The Kawarau Bungy Centre, opened in December 2003, marks a new phase for the Kawarau Bridge site. This ecologically designed building has been created in harmony with the unique landscape of the region and includes merchandise, cafe, interactive and interpretive areas. Radically improved viewing areas also highlight the historic bridge and jumpers. The Bungy Dome multi-media experience, located inside the Kawarau Bungy Centre, expands the bungy experience for both spectators and jumpers, taking viewers through the emotional and intellectual journey of the jump.

Please note that a Bungy jump is an optional extra, and pre-bookings are recommended. The Bungy jump is not suitable for children under 10.

Later we enjoy a return ride to Bob’s Peak on the Skyline Gondola, plus 3 luge rides per person. High above Queenstown on Bob's Peak, 790m above sea level and 450 metres above the town is the Skyline complex, reached by gondola cableway, 5 minutes walk from central Queenstown. Breathtaking views from the top extend almost full circle, from Coronet Peak around to The Remarkables and on to Cecil and Walter Peaks on the other side of beautiful Lake Wakatipu. The luge tracks that wind 800 metres through the trees down Bob's Peak from the Skyline Gondola and Restaurant complex are 4 metre wide reinforced concrete. You ride a 3 wheeled luge cart that has a unique braking and steering system which allows you to travel as slow or as fast as you dare, controlling your ride and creating your own fun!

Day 6:

Queenstown - Walter Peak High Country Farm Cruise & Tour.  We cruise across the lake on the TSS Earnslaw to the Colonel's Homestead at Walter Peak Station (sheep ranch). The cruise allows you plenty of time to explore the TSS Earnslaw's decks and bridge, view the engine room and historic displays in the Fo'c'sle Gallery. Enjoy high country hospitality over typical morning or afternoon tea, and an entertaining tour, which provides a glimpse into farming life. Sheep dogs working and a sheep shearing display are included.

On our return to Queenstown, the rest of the day is free.

Day 7:

Queenstown – Te Anau - Glow-worm Caves.  We depart Queenstown on the road between eastern shores of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables and Hector Mountains to Kingston at its southernmost end. It was from here that the early lake steamers (like the TSS Earnslaw) used to ferry passengers and freight from the railway terminus to Queenstown and the sheep ranches around the lake.

For tours from October to the end of April, we take the Kingston Flyer to Fairlight. The original Kingston Flyer was a passenger service that operated between Kingston and the Main South Line at Gore from 1878 through to the mid 1950s. It provided a passageway to Queenstown and the surrounding stations, by meeting up with the lake steamers at Kingston Wharf. Today the Kingston Flyer operates on a 14km stretch of track and consists of two AB Pacific Class steam locomotives (NZ built): AB 795 dating 1927 was a former Royal Train Locomotive & AB 778 dating 1925 and seven steam-heated wooden vintage carriages dating back to 1898.

When the train is not operating we travel by road to Fairlight.

We then continue our journey from Fairlight over the tussock-grassed high plains to Fiordland. We visit the Te Anau Glow-worm Caves and include a cruise and tour. In the afternoon we explore a mysterious underground world of rushing water before drifting in silent darkness beneath the luminous shimmer of thousands of glow-worms. Your glow-worm cave adventure begins with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau to the western shore. The Te Anau system of caves penetrates the side of the Murchison Mountains, caused by water penetrating down a fissure in the limestone from Lake Orbell, some 900 metre above. After an introduction, trained guides then accompany you underground in small groups. Explore a mysterious underground world of rushing water, by path and by small boat, drifting through silent darkness to the glow-worm grotto. The delicate incandescence of thousands of tiny glow-worms shimmering above you is a magical sight. Photography and video filming are not permitted inside the caves.

We spend two nights in Te Anau.

Day 8:

Te Anau - Free day.  Today is a free day for your to relax or enjoy some of the many optional activities available.

Our experienced guides will then take you on a guided tour of this 'Famous road” back to Te Anau. Highlights include 'The Chasm', 'Mirror lakes', 'Hollyford River', 'Eglinton Valley', as well as your guides favorite spots.

Day 9:

Te Anau – Fairlie area. We leave Fiordland via the high tussock-grassed plains back to Queenstown. We drive through the rugged Kawarau Gorge enroute to Cromwell, following the eastern shores of Lake Dunstan to Lindis Crossing and Tarras. We reach the Mackenzie Country via the Lindis Pass over the southern end of the Dunstan Range and descend the hills to Omarama. From Omarama it is a straight run through past Twizel to Lake Pukaki, which is fed by the glacial waters stemming from the ice and snowfields of Mt Cook National Park. We then head eastwards across the Mackenzie Country to Lake Tekapo, from where you may obtain good views of Mt Cook on a fine day. We drive over Burke Pass, the landscape changing dramatically to the rolling farmlands around Fairlie.

We have a farm Stay in Canterbury – dinner & breakfast are included. Farm hosting is staying with friendly New Zealanders in the comfort of their homes. It is about meeting people who are genuinely interested in sharing their country, their life style and themselves with overseas and local visitors. The activities available and interests of your hosts are many and varied. The choice is yours to become involved or simply to relax!  (D)

Day 10:

Farm stay to Christchurch. After our farm stay, we regroup and from Fairlie pass through a succession of "valley" villages to Geraldine, an area which was always well-endowed with superb native forests. Our journey continues over the Orari River to Rangitata and heads north up the main highway across the Canterbury Plains, through Ashburton to Christchurch.

We drive to Willowbank where you are accorded the traditional welcome (Powhiri). You are welcomed onto the Pa (village) with a powerful challenge by our fearsome warrior and a haka powhiri of welcome. Hear the Maori chief welcome you in our native language. Relax and enjoy an informative interactive and joy-filled evening as our Maori people entertain you with unforgettable traditional dancing. Learn the haka or poi dance. Feel the emotions of our Waiata Aroha (love songs). Learn and see how the Maori People existed before the arrival of European technology. See and learn the ancient arts of the Maori Hunter. Come face to face with some of the oldest animals and reptiles on the planet and the importance that they had on an ancient people. At night, you'll be enchanted by the guided wildlife viewing tour through the 'New Zealand Experience' and delighted by the extensive display of native and introduced birds and animals that make up New Zealand's wildlife. As you wander through the native bush like setting, guides will explain the unique stories of our fauna and flora. Be captivated by the ponds of giant trout and salmon, a walk through the massive 'alpine' aviaries, which house the world's only 'mountain parrot' - the Kea, while tunnels and caves make this an area of constant surprise. Of course the highlight of your trip will be New Zealand's elusive national symbol - the Kiwi bird. At Willowbank, we don't hide our Kiwis away behind a glass wall. Instead, they are in an open and natural enclosure. Enjoy the "Taste of New Zealand" dinner in Willowbank's award winning Restaurant. (B,D)

Time:For detailed information see www.timezoneconverter.com or www.timeanddate.com
Books and Reading Material:

You might like to read up on the destinations that you are about to visit as these cities all have interesting sites and histories. We recommend a variety of guidebooks such as Lonely Planet, The Rough Guide and Insight Guides. All these publications have good general information as well as more specific country information that will help orientate you in the countries you visit.

Security:

- Do not take unnecessary valuables with you.

- A money belt, or something similar, worn close to your body is the best way to carry passports, airline tickets and money.

- DO NOT leave any valuables in ANY hotel room, please use SAFETY DEPOSIT BOXES. Items are left at the individuals’ risk.

- Pickpockets operate worldwide, you must always exercise care.

- Be aware that anything left lying around could also be liable to theft.

Money:

We recommend an average of NZ$50-75 per day. This of course depends on your own spending habits, the number of optional excursions you wish to take and the amount of additional snacks, souvenirs and drinks you wish to buy along the way. Be aware that some towns and cities are more expensive than others. Similarly there will be some days when you may spend nothing at all and others when you exceed your budget.

We advise that you carry a mixture of cash, credit/debit cards and travellers cheques with you on your trip. We suggest that you record your travellers cheque numbers and keep these records separate from your cheques. American Express and Thomas Cook Travellers Cheques are most widely accepted.

Credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere in Australia. They can also be used to obtain money from ATMs. You should make sure you know your PIN number. ATM cards can be used widely in Australia. Again, you will need your PIN. Your bank will provide you with more details.

How much should I take?

- Please bring lightweight walking shoes or sandals, and a day sac.

- Because of limited luggage space on transport, we must limit each passenger to ONE main suitcase or frameless backpack and one day bag. Your main bag must not weigh more than 20 kg’s. A frameless or internally framed backpack is the best way to carry your belongings since it is easy to lift on and off vehicles.

- A small daypack is practical for keeping general items (e.g. camera, books, wallets etc.) at hand when your main pack is out of reach. It is also handy for day trips and excursions.

- We also recommend that you keep your passport, credit cards travellers checks etc. on you at all times, preferably in a money belt worn under your clothes.

TRAVEL TIP: You might be tempted to buy a few souvenirs here and there, so leave a little room for those extra purchases!!

Personal Effects:

We suggest that you take into account the time of year you will be travelling, and pack accordingly to the season. Quick drying clothes are recommended, and at many hotels and campsites there are laundry facilities. Your tour leader will advise where this is possible.

Personal Effects:

Camera & film, Spare passport photos, Water bottle, Money belt, Torch, Sewing kit, Sunhat/ Sunglasses, Music cassettes/CDs, Books, Wet Ones, Soap to wash clothes, Writing materials, Swiss Army knife, Calculator, Personal toiletries, including tampons, Contraceptives, Insect Repellent, Sunscreen

For the children: A notebook to record the trip is a great idea - younger children can use it to stick postcards in and draw pictures of what they have seen, while older children will enjoy keeping a diary of everything they have got up to. A cheap digital camera will pay dividends, and you may want to invest in a portable DVD player. Travel games are a good idea for any longer journeys, or free time.

Acommodation:We have put a lot of thought and effort into locating the most appropriate type of accommodation for each tour. It will always be clean, comfortable and of a very high standard. Depending on the tour, it will range from hotels and motels, to farm stays as well as camping and even swag bushcamps.
Drug Policy:

Under no circumstances are any illegal drugs allowed on any part of the trip. Anyone discovered in possession of any such drugs, will be asked to leave the tour immediately without question or refund.

Optionals:

Kumuka endeavors to advertise a compliment of optional activities available locally during tours with selected ground handlers to make your tour more enjoyable. These ground handlers and activity partners are selected for their standards in quality, professional ability and reputation. Although Kumuka has developed a travel insurance policy to cover all activities offered during your journey, Kumuka cannot be held responsible for injuries or claims arising from adventurous activities by a third party.

Details and prices of optional activities will be advised by your tour leader.

Staying in Touch:

Whilst on tour you will probably want to stay in touch with family and friends. There are several ways of doing this:

Mobile Phone – Before departing your home country check with your phone supplier to see if it compatible with the mobile phone networks in the countries that you are traveling to, and how much will it cost to use abroad.

Email – Internet Cafes are very cheap and popular, and you are sure to come across several during your tour. If you haven’t done so already, set up a free Google Mail, Hotmail, or Yahoo email account which you can then access from any computer. Internet Cafes will charge a nominal fee for using their computers. Within Europe some hotels charge a wifi connection fee and we cannot guarantee a wifi connection at all hotels we use.

Twitter – A method of communication that is rapidly gaining in popularity on the Internet especially amongst travelers. Twitter allows you to send short messages and update your friends and family with where you are on tour and what you are doing. Create your free account at http://twitter.com. Visit Kumuka’s page on Twitter at http://twitter.com/kumuka

Facebook – Very popular website that allows you to upload stories, get in touch with fellow travellers before and after your Kumuka tour, upload photos and videos to share with other travellers, your family and friends. To create a free account, go to www.facebook.com and then become a fan of Kumuka’s Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/pages/Kumuka-Worldwide/26617121087?ref=ts

Postcards – The good ol’ fashioned postcard. But you will probably get home before the postcard does!
