Perhaps spend the afternoon strolling around Madrid's famous flea market - El Rastro. The list is endless - don't forget to visit the Plaza Mayor (Main Square) or even the Royal Palace.

You could also use your day to visit the 1992 Olympic Stadium or spend a lazy day on one of Barcelona’s beaches. With so much to see, it is a good idea to plan on a full day in Barcelona not returning to the hotel until after dinner.

Stop for an amazing sea food lunch in this the seafood capital of Provence and try it's most famous dish, Bouillabaisse whilst absorbing the historical ambience that is Marseille. Maybe visit the Jardin des Vestiges, (Garden of Ruins), an interesting archaeological park in the very centre of the city overlooked by the huge "Centre Bourse" which has the ruins of the 1st-century docks and the 4th-century entrance to the fortified Greek town.
If amazing views are your thing visit the Notre Dame de la Garde a 19th century basilica. It offers an exceptional view of the city, the islands of the Frioul and the castle. Why not take the time to explore some of the pretty villages located nearby but whatever you decide there is something here for you!
Dinner this evening is not included. |
| Day 8: | Marseille to Nice - Monaco. Today we will stop for a short time at the famous Fragonard Perfumery of Grasse, where they make French perfume in the traditional manner. Stock up on your travel perfumes, aftershaves, creams, shampoos, lotions and potions, all at warehouse prices.
We arrive into Nice in the early afternoon, and there will be time to look around the city before freshening up prior to our evening in Monaco. Tonight is the perfect opportunity to dress up and rub elbows with the rich and famous, and those who are pretending to be!
The coach will drive along the famous Moyenne Corniche, with its stunning cliff top views over the coastline and into the sovereign state of Monaco. Dinner will be in the prestigious capital of Monaco, Ville.
Following dinner, we will drive on the Formula 1 Grand Prix racetrack before you are dropped off for free time to check out the various casinos and bars that Monte Carlo has to offer. You might want to visit the jaw dropping Grand Casino, designed by Charles Garnier in the 1800s. This is the same place James Bond ordered his first martini, shaken not stirred! There is a 10 € admission fee, but it’s well worth it to visit the monument that offers both gambling and fine artwork.
The coach will then be returning to Nice, or if you’re winning at the casino you may wish to continue and catch a taxi back to Nice, costing approximately 60 - 70 €.

We drive to the French/Italian border along the coast of the Italian Riviera and through seemingly endless tunnels. We will arrive in Pisa in the mid-afternoon. | Day 11: | Florence. Today we will start by driving up to the Piazzale Michelangelo where you will get an astonishing panoramic view over the scenic city of Florence. Your tour leader will then walk you down the hill into the centre of Florence where we will meet a local guide for a walking tour. This is included in your tour cost and is a good chance to learn some local history.
The local guide will take you to the Piazza della Signoria - which is an outdoor sculpture gallery, which includes a replica of Michelangelo's statue of David. They will then lead you down to the famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge and escort you up through the main streets to see the Duomo Cathedral.
The tour will end at Leonardo's Leather Works, a reputable leather workshop where you will receive a demonstration of how to pick quality leather from poor imitations - don't say that we didn't warn you! There are lots of leatherworks and jewellers shops, the latter especially on the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge). It is always important to ensure that what you buy is genuine, as this cannot always be guaranteed when shopping in the market. After the leather demonstration you have free time to go and see the original David at Galleria dell Academia and the Uffizi Gallery, or simply to meander around the streets and piazzas of Florence.
Note: If you wish to visit Michaelangelo's Statue of David at the Accademia: due to an increase in visitor numbers, we recommend that all passengers wishing to visit the statue pre-book tickets at least one month in advance. Passengers also wishing to visit the Uffizi Gallery should pre book tickets to avoid long queues. Tickets to both can be booked online at: www.weekendafirenze.com. As a guideline, the morning's activities will finish at approx noon. Any tickets should therefore be booked after 1.00pm and no later than 4.30pm. To see both, book a ticket for the Uffizi for around 1.00pm and the Academia for around 3.00pm. The estimated time of departure from Florence back to the hotel is 6.30pm.
Kumuka cannot be liable for any necessary changes to the tour schedule that may in turn affect your museum reservations |
| Day 12: | Florence to Rome. We start the day with a visit to the beautiful town of Orvieto, a charming medieval town perched on the hilltop. To visit the town you will need to take the funicular up from the coach park, (cost approx 2 € return).
Following lunch we depart for Rome, where we will spend the next two nights.
After you have checked into the hotel, we will have a group meal with some new additions to the group, after which the evening is yours. |

This provides an ideal introduction to some of the oldest sights in Rome. Our local guide has extensive local knowledge and will share with you many fascinating insights to Rome's ancient history! This tour will end at approximately 12pm at Piazza Navona.
The afternoon is free to visit Piazza Navona, Vatican city and the Sistine Chapel where Michelangelo spent 4 years painting the magnificent frescos that have graced the walls and ceilings of the Pope’s private chapel since 1512. | Day 14: | Rome to Sorrento via Pompeii. We will depart early to drive to Pompeii, a partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples. Try some Limoncello a liqueur made from the local large lemons grown nearby or sample some exquisite gelato that Italy is famed for.
Dinner is not included tonight so why not take the opportunity to find a shady spot to enjoy a meal whilst watching the spectacular sunsets over the bay? |
| Day 16: | Sorrento to Assisi. Leaving the steep white cliffs of Sorrento with it's inspiring landscape we head inland and north to Assisi, famous as the home and birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint to all animals. Located in the Perugia region of Italy, it is a well preserved example of medieval architecture that will take you back in time to a quieter more simple way of life. Take in the amazing views from the beautiful Basilica de San Francesco piazza, the lower church where St. Francis is buried, or go shopping perhaps for that special souvenir in the main shopping streets and squares of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Dinner is not included tonight but there are many cafe's and restaurants serving the best that Umbrian cuisine and wine has to offer. |
| Day 17: | Assisi to Venice. Continuing north our destination today is Venice. We break our journey to have lunch in Bologna. Known nationally as Italy's culinary capital it is also an attractive city with it's well preserved centre. Besides famous pasta dishes, Bologna is also known for some of the best pâtés in Italy and many other culinary innovations, seek out the best for lunch or indulge in some intense shopping time the choice is yours prior to finishing the drive to Venice!
There is more to Venice than gondolas and water ways, the group of islands also has some of the most skilled glass blowers in the world. Dependent on traffic, we should arrive early evening in a suburb of Venice called Mestre, on the main land. As Venice is an island with tiny winding streets and canals between buildings, the main form of transport is gondolas and canal boats. It is therefore, still somewhat inaccessible to coaches!
We will stay in Mestre for two nights, and use the waterbus to get to Venice Island the following day.
Tonight, once the group has freshened up from the journey, we will meet and go to dinner. |
| Day 18: | Venice - Coach Free Day. Today we will be departing the hotel at a modest time to make our way into the historical centre of Venice by boat. This is an exhilarating journey back in time. We disembark near St. Mark’s Square where we will see the amazing St Mark’s Basilica. Venice is full of quaint shops, restaurants and thousands of pigeons! It is also famous for its glass blowing; your tour leader will organise a demonstration of this traditional Venetian craft for you.

You will have the afternoon free to spend time in the Doge’s Palace, cross the famed Bridge of Sighs, visit the beach on the Lido, catch a water bus along the Grand Canal, visit one of Venice’s 200 churches, wander around the Rialto bridge and markets or take a break in one of the many tiny street side bars and cafes.
Dinner is not included this evening but Venice is filled with lots of cafes and restaurants in charming locations. By evening, St Mark’s Square comes alive with orchestras and people waltzing on the pavements. |
| Day 19: | Venice to Cinque Terre. First stop today is Verona, city of romance and love described beautifully as the setting of one history's greatest love stories written by Shakespeare, 'Romeo and Juliet'. See Juliet's balcony and rub her nearby statue for good luck. With it's sophisticated shop's, colourful history and lively atmosphere Verona remains one of Italy's little known secrets.
Continuing one to the Cinque Terre region we will spend 2 nights amongst this spectacular rugged coastal scenery on the Italian Riviera. The Cinque Terre is a National Park and Unesco World Heritage site since 1997. Here you will be able to explore the five villages that form the Cinque Terre, suspended between sea and land on sheer cliffs.
Dinner is included tonight |
| Day 20: | Cinque Terre. Today we will take you into the Cinque Terre region where you will be able to explore the five villages that form the Cinque Terre at your own leisure, suspended between sea and land on sheer cliffs - which cling to the Ligurian cliffs along Italy’s western coast. They are usually visited collectively, simply because they’re so close to one another that you can walk from the first to the fifth in a matter of hours, but there are five different towns and each does have its own personality. We recommend strong shoes today to cope with the uneven paths and roads encountered. Due to it's popularity, everywhere will be busy but it is worth it for a glimpse into this fascinating corner of Italy. Absorb the beautiful scenery, try a deliciously sweet dessert wine called Sciacchetrà - try it with biscotti, discover some nice sunbathing beaches, and sample the excellent fresh seafood.
Dinner is not included today and your Tour Leader will advise you on the time to return to the coach for the trip back to the hotel. |
| Day 21: | Siena. Leaving the hotel early today we travel through the beautiful Tuscan countryside south to San Gimignano for lunch and a spot of wine tasting! We then carry onto Siena where upon arrival we will walk around and explore some of this medieval city's highlights. Afterwards you will have some free time to explore this historic city prior to checking in at the hotel.
Dinner is not included tonight but Siena is an enchanting place in the evening. The façades of its Medieval buildings are lit up by the thousand street lights. Before dinner, why not go for a romantic walk, to Fonte Branda for example, a charming fountain that dates back to 1080. Choose a small trattoria nearby and enjoy the true flavours of Siena cooking, or perhaps choose a restaurant near the Campo for dinner and then continue your evening in one of the several clubs in the area, some of which also offer excellent live music. |
| Day 22: | Siena - Coach Free Day. Make the most of your last free day and explore Siena. Perhaps start in the il Campo, the spectacular shell-shaped square where the famous Palio di Siena is held each year. You can admire the wonderful Palazzo Publico, whose interior is decorated with allegories by Lorenzetti and which houses the interesting Civic Museum. Visit the huge Torre del Mangia in the square. The top is 120 metres from the ground, from where you have a wonderful view of the city, carry on to Piazza San Giovanni to visit the fourteenth-century Battistero di San Giovanni.
Just a short stroll from the Battistero you will come upon the wonderful Piazza Duomo. Here you can see the Gothic style Cathedral that houses works by Michelangelo, Bernini and Donatello. Next to the cathedral you will also find the interesting Museum of Metropolitan Work and the Santa Maria della Scala building, which are both worth a visit.
If you haven't already shopped for family and friends or your own personal souvenirs of Italy take the time now to wander and search out that special gift. Some of the most popular objects bought as souvenirs are vases, jugs and candle holders. The Santa Lucia Bells, made in terracotta and painted by hand are unique and if it is food or confectionary you seek panforte and ricciarelli can be found everywhere.
Dinner is included tonight, our last group meal of the tour and your chance to farewell your fellow travellers. |

| Staying in Touch: | Whilst on tour you will probably want to stay in touch with family and friends. There are several ways of doing this:
Mobile Phone – Before departing your home country check with your phone supplier to see if it compatible with the mobile phone networks in the countries that you are traveling to, and how much will it cost to use abroad.
Email – Internet Cafes are very cheap and popular, and you are sure to come across several during your tour. If you haven’t done so already, set up a free Google Mail, Hotmail, or Yahoo email account which you can then access from any computer. Internet Cafes will charge a nominal fee for using their computers. Within Europe some hotels charge a wifi connection fee and we cannot guarantee a wifi connection at all hotels we use.
Twitter – A method of communication that is rapidly gaining in popularity on the Internet especially amongst travelers. Twitter allows you to send short messages and update your friends and family with where you are on tour and what you are doing. Create your free account at http://twitter.com. Visit Kumuka’s page on Twitter at http://twitter.com/kumuka
Facebook – Very popular website that allows you to upload stories, get in touch with fellow travellers before and after your Kumuka tour, upload photos and videos to share with other travellers, your family and friends. Email - If you have any specific comments about your tour then please write to us by email to operations@kumuka.com |
| Please Note: | Please be aware that arrival times and the itinerary may change due to unforeseen delays or events such as festivals and public holidays. However, we shall endeavor to ensure all sites are visited and that your tour runs smoothly. As you will have read there are coach free days written into the itinerary. The reason for this is that EU law dictates that coach drivers are restricted to the number of hours they can drive in any one day and that they must have at least one day off in seven. Due to this and also for your convenience we try to get hotels that are close to public transport and centrally located. Public transport in Europe is of a good standard. |
| What's Not Included: | All optional excursions, visas and meals unless otherwise stated in the itinerary. |
| Insurance: | Travel insurance is compulsory for all tours. All clients MUST be insured to cover personal accident, medical expenses, cancellation, curtailment and repatriation. It is also very important that your insurance policy is relevant to the Kumuka style of travel. Kumuka offers a specially negotiated insurance policy specifically tailored to adventure travel. As well as providing substantial cover for medical emergency, cancellation and curtailment, personal luggage, money and valuables and legal expenses, this insurance will also provide cover for the adventure activities you may choose to undertake whilst on tour. Please call us on the Kumuka freephone number 0800 068 8855 (UK only), or on 1300 667 277 in Australia, for further information.
No client will be allowed on tours without suitable insurance. If you have already arranged insurance elsewhere, please be aware that many of the optional activities such as bungy jumping or water rafting may not be covered on your policy. If you plan on doing any of these activities please purchase additional insurance.
At the start of your tour you will be asked to present your original policy document and complete an insurance information form. We recommend that you have a photocopy of this document, which you keep separate from the original.
Please note: you will not be permitted to join a Kumuka Tour without travel insurance. |
| Passport: | Your passport is a valuable document and you should exercise extreme care in keeping it safe. We recommend that you keep your passport on you at all times, preferably in a money belt that is worn under your clothing. We advise that you take copies of relevant pages in your passport and any visas that you may purchase in case of loss or damage. Your tour leader will require your passport details at the pre-departure meeting. Again, we recommend that you have a photocopy of all passport details, kept separate. Your passport must be valid for six months after the END of your tour, and must have one blank page for each country to be visited. |
| Visa Requirements: | It is important that you obtain the appropriate visas before you embark on your Europe trip. Country entry regulations change daily, www.kumuka.com provides you with visa information. Please consult your relevant embassy for all details such as opening hours or costs. Visas cannot be obtained once you have started your tour, and during the peak summer months it can take longer than normal to get visas, please allow extra time to do this.
EACH CLIENT IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING ALL NECESSARY VISAS BEFORE JOINING A TOUR.
Please note: If you require a Schengen visa, please ensure that you obtain a double entry visa for Germany.
Kumuka does not accept responsibility for changes in regulations or requirements for visas. The information provided is given in good faith. |
| Medical Information and Vaccinations: | Vaccinations:
No vaccinations are compulsory in Europe however you may need additional inoculations so please contact your G.P or a travel medical centre for further information.
We also recommend:
- A dental check-up prior to travelling.
- That you know your blood group in case of emergency.
- That if you have any pre-existing medical conditions which might affect you on tour, you make these known to your tour leader and your agent/Kumuka at the time of your booking.
You can also visit www.kumuka.com for further details.
Medical Supplies:
Your tour leader has a well-equipped medical kit that by law must remain sealed and can only be used in an emergency. We advise that all passengers bring along their own personal first aid kit. Below is a list of some recommended items:
Band Aids/Bandages, Laxatives, Upset stomach remedy, Anti-diarrhoea remedy, Panadol/Aspirin, Rehydration remedy, Antiseptic cream/powder, Sterile dressing, any relevant course of medication such as contraceptive pills.
A complete Travellers Medical Pack can be purchased for approximately US$25 at most Vaccination Centres, Chemists and outdoor travel shops. |
| Security: | Europe, like the rest of the world, is no stranger to theft. You must exercise extreme care with wallets, cameras and other valuables especially in towns or busy tourist areas. We advise that you make copies of your passport, credit cards, airline tickets and your insurance policy and that you keep a careful note of both used and unused traveller’s cheque numbers. At times when you are unable to store your valuables in safety deposit boxes in hotels we recommend that you carry some sort of money belt or hidden pouch for safekeeping of valuable items. |
| Money: | We recommend an average of €40-50 per day. This of course depends on your own spending habits, the number of optional excursions you wish to take and the amount of additional snacks, souvenirs and drinks you wish to buy along the way. Be aware that some countries are more expensive than others and that if you are travelling through several your expenses will vary enormously. Similarly there will be some days when you spend nothing at all and others when you exceed your budget.
-
We advise that you carry a mixture of cash, credit/debit cards and travellers cheques with you on your trip and that these are in Euros.
-
We suggest that you record your travellers cheque numbers and keep these records separate from your cheques.
-
American Express and Thomas Cook Travellers Cheques (with the exception of Spain and Portugal) are most widely accepted.
-
Credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere in Europe. They can also be used to obtain money from ATMs. You should make sure you know your PIN number.
-
ATM cards can be used widely in Europe. Again, you will need your PIN. Your bank will provide you with more details.
-
Euro cheques are now valid for all EU countries except the UK, Switzerland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The Euro has come into effect as a cash currency from 2002. |
| Local Itineraries: | Please use your discretion and be sensitive to cultural differences in the countries that you visit, in particular visits to religious buildings and when taking photographs. Your Tour Leader will advise you of any specific customs to observe. |
| Left Luggage | Kumuka cannot be held liable for any left luggage whilst on tour and due to high admin and postage costs no left items will be returned. |
| Luggage and Personal Equipment: | How much should I take?
-
Because of limited luggage space on coaches and Eurostar, we must limit each passenger to ONE main suitcase or frameless backpack and one day bag. Your main bag must not weigh more than 20 kg’s.
-
A frameless or internally framed backpack is the best way to carry your belongings since it is easy to lift on and off vehicles.
-
A small daypack is practical for keeping general items (e.g. camera, books, wallets etc.) at hand when your main pack is out of reach. It is also handy for day trips and excursions. We also recommend that you keep your passport, credit cards Travellers Cheques etc. on you at all times, preferably in a money belt worn under your clothes.

| Climate: | For detailed climate information see www.kumuka.com.
Travel Tip: Always bring a lightweight, waterproof jacket and/or an umbrella even during the height of summer - this should prepare you for anything! |
| Personal Effects: | We suggest that you take into account the time of year you will be travelling, and pack accordingly to the season. Quick drying clothes are recommended, and at many hotels there are laundry facilities. Your tour leader will advise where this is possible.

| Language: | English will be widely spoken in the major tourist attractions of the main cities. Take the time before your trip to read up on the country you will be visiting and perhaps learn a few words of the language. Your effort will always be welcomed and will make your trip all the more enjoyable. |
| Photography: | Please remember, we are guests in the countries through which we travel and we may sometimes inadvertently cause offence by taking photographs without first asking permission.
It is absolutely forbidden by law to take photos at any borders, as they are all active military installations. |
| Food: | Vegetarians or those with special dietary needs can also be catered for however in some countries the type of food may be limited. Please let the Reservations team know your special requirements as soon as possible so we can do all possible to assist your needs.
We provide hearty meals, which are paid for through your Tour Fund. This will be indicated on your travel voucher, which must be presented to your tour leader at the pre-departure meeting on first day of the tour.
The variety of food will differ, as you will be visiting a number of different countries. We try to ensure that you get the most experience from your Kumuka Europe trip and one of the ways to do this is by trying local cuisine. |
| Accommodation: | We have put a lot of thought and effort into locating the most appropriate type of accommodation for each tour. It will always be clean, comfortable and of a very high standard. All accommodation is in superior tourist class hotel. We guarantee accommodation in a twin room for every passenger on mainland European departures. |
| Pre and Post Tour Accommodation: | All our tours begin with a pre-departure meeting when you meet your tour leader, driver and fellow travellers. If you wish to spend a few additional days in your start city before the departure of your tour, then we can arrange accommodation for you. On the last day of the tour we usually arrive at our final destination in the late afternoon, when the tour ends. If you would like to book accommodation for that night or even stay additional nights, we will be more than happy to arrange this for you as well. All our accommodation is carefully chosen, conveniently located, clean and comfortable. (All rates per person per night and subject to availability). Please be aware that accommodation availability can fill very quickly especially during high season and recommend that you book this as soon as possible. It will NOT be possible to confirm any pre tour accommodation made 2 weeks or less prior to your arrival. |
| Tipping: | In Europe tipping is a way of life and very much expected. For many tipping is a means of supplementing their wage and is a normal part of payment for goods and services. Be sure to keep small denomination notes or coins on you to avoid embarrassment. Sales and service taxes are imposed in some restaurants and bars. |
| Drug Policy: | Under no circumstances are any illegal drugs allowed on any part of the trip. Anyone discovered in possession of any such drugs, will be asked to leave the tour immediately without question or refund. |
| Optional Activities: |
Kumuka endeavours to offer optional activities available locally during tours with selected ground handlers to make your tour more enjoyable. These ground handlers and activity partners are selected for their standards in quality, professional ability and reputation. Whereas, Kumuka has developed a travel insurance policy to cover all activities offered during your journey, Kumuka cannot be held responsible for injuries or claims arising from adventurous activities by third parties.
On our website www.kumuka.com you will see a list of excursions, museums and monuments available at your expense on all European tours. Please note that these are intended as a guide only and prices and availability cannot be guaranteed. Prices are in Euros.
Your tour leader will assist you in planning and organising any optional excursions. The list on our website is by no means complete. There will be many other optional activities available. We strongly advise if you are entitled to a student card that you obtain one prior to departure - many museums and galleries in Europe offer substantial student discounts. |
