This 2 week hotel-based tour includes some amazing hikes through the spectacular and rugged landscapes of Alaska and the Yukon, such as the Kluane and Denali National Parks . Follow the trails of the old gold diggers and explorers as you travel through the mountain ranges and glaciers of the Northern American Continent. Your guide will lead you through wild and untouched territory where you can watch an abundance of wildlife including bears, wolves and caribous. If you want to explore the natural beauty of Alaska and the Yukon and prefer to stay in a hotel at the end of each day rather than camping, then this is the tour for you!

Whitehorse - Arrival in Whitehorse, at the airport you will be met by our local tour guide and transferred to the hotel where we will meet the rest of the group. (Whitehorse, overnight in hotel).

Skagway – Haines Junction - Skagway, once the gate to the greatest gold rush of all time! The Chilkoot Trail was once the way leading to the gold rivers. Later that afternoon we will aboard the ferry which will lead us through the Lynn Fjords. Arriving at the harbour of Haines we will continue to drive to Haines Junction. Shortly after leaving the pacific coast we will pass the Valley of the Bald Eagles. The Haines Road offers plenty of opportunities to see the breathtaking view of the mountains. Passing the Lakes Dezedash and Kathleen we arrive at Haines Junction. (Haines Junction, overnight in hotel).

Haines Junction – Whitehorse - We will spend the morning hiking another trail in the Kluane National Park called the Auriol Trail which will take about 4 hours. Haines Junction also offers a great variety of optional activities. How about a helicopter flight over the glaciers of the park? In the early evening we will continue on the two hour drive to Whitehorse via the Alaska Highway. On our way there we will stop at an Indian Village called Champagne and at a dog musher who breeds huskies. (Whitehorse, overnight in hotel).

Dempster Highway - After getting up real early we will drive up the Dempster Highway which is 730 km long and is the only connection to the peak of Inuvik at the Polar Sea. We will start our hike at the foot of the Tombstone Mountains; this will lead us into the tundra of this mountain range, where every season has its unique attraction. (Dawson City, overnight in hotel).

Tok – Denali National Park - Today takes us further west, first along the famous Alaska Highway, built to aid the Pacific Front during WWII, then along the incredibly scenic Denali Highway. The Denali Highway offers an almost cinematic wilderness panorama. The route takes us through a vast glacial floodplain; the road in fact is built on glacial eskers as it travels to the border of Denali National Park. This is one of the most remote regions in the north; few Alaskans have ever traveled this route. In the evening there is the option to participate to participate in a scenic one hour glacier flight that will provide a chance to view Mt. Denali, North America’s tallest peak (over 6000m!) in good weather. (Overnight accommodation in the vicinity of the park)

Denali National Park - Seward - Today we say goodbye to Denali and travel along the George Parks Highway through the interior to Anchorage. There, we join the Seward Highway and travel along scenic Turnagain Arm; named by Captain Cook after yet another unsuccessful attempt to find the Northwest Passage. The spectacular tides, among the highest in the world, attract the all-white beluga whales who hunt salmon in the murky waters. In Portage, we’ll visit one of Alaska’s “drive-in” glaciers before continuing along the Kenai Peninsula. Cascading waterfalls, crystal clear streams, emerald pine forests and snow-capped mountains appear around every corner. (Overnight accommodation in Seward)

Seward – Anchorage - Today the journey takes us back along the Kenai Peninsula to the scenic Turnagain Arm, named after one of his many failed attempts to find the Northwest Passage. Keep an eye open for the white beluga whales, which can often be seen here frolicking in the shallow waters! The afternoon is free for optional sighseeing and touring in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. There are many interesting things to discover including Lake Hood, which is home to the largest float plane base in the world. Each day, some 800 floatplanes take off and land from this location in central Anchorage! Nearby is the Aviation Museum, where many legendary bush aircraft are on display. Downtown Anchorage offers excellent souvenir shopping at several American-style “malls”. Or if shopping is not your idea of a fun activity on holiday, how about a visit to one of the many pubs and locally crafted “micro” breweries?! (Overnight accommodation in Anchorage)

This tour is operated in conjunction with our local partners in Canada.  You will be joined by other Kumuka passengers as well as travellers who have booked through other agencies.

The itinerary will be followed as closely as possible. However, this tour visits areas that can be unpredictable and there may be times when it is necessary to change the route according to abnormal weather patterns, the presence of wild animals, or any unforeseen local conditions that are out of our control. Please be flexible and respect the changes that your Tour Leader may have to make during the tour.

Your passport is a valuable document and you should exercise care in keeping it safe. It should be valid for at least six months after the end of your tour and it must have at least one blank page for each visa required. We advise that you take photocopies of your passport in case of loss or damage. Alternatively, you can scan copies of these pages and email them to yourself so that you can access them if you happen to lose your passport whilst abroad and have to apply for a new one at your nearest Embassy.

If you wish to spend a few additional days in your starting or finishing city, then we can arrange accommodation for you. All our accommodation is carefully chosen, conveniently located, clean and comfortable. (All rates per person per night and subject to availability).

IMPORTANT: Some tours depart from the starting city very early on Day 1 therefore you might not have enough time to enjoy the optional activities in that area. Please check the tour itinerary. Furthermore, some tours end on arrival in the finishing city and your flight may leave early the following morning, therefore leaving no time to partake in any optional activities in that area. Again, please check the itinerary.
